Deuteronomy 6:5,"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."
Matthew 10:37,"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me."
Luke 14:26,"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters,-yes, even his own life-he cannot be my disciple."
Jesus is using a type of speech called a hyperbole in where he uses exaggeration to drive his point home. We must love Jesus more than anything. The Lord commands us to love Him and to love Him with all of our hearts, soul, mind, and strength. We cannot serve Him if our heart is divided or compartmentalized.
The numerical equivalent of the word all is 100% this is the whole part of something.
The Lord commands and deserves all of us, our entire being must be dedicated to Him and His service. There is no room for self here (Luke 9:57-62).
We are to love the Lord with all of ourselves all of the time. This is pleasing to Him and shows us to be His disciples.
John 14:23,"If anyone loves me he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."
What does your heart look like?
